The Glory of Chinese Printing - This site explores the ancient history of Chinese printing. There is a wealth of photos of ancient artifacts and texts that illustrate concepts and periods throughout history.

The Last Expression: Art from Auschwitz - This site explores the role of art to prisoners of Auschwitz. You can read about the artists' lives, view their work, and watch video interviews of surviving artists (you will need Windows Media Player for this). The Art of Tibet - This gorgeous site has an amazing collection of the sacred art of the Himalayas. There are searchable indexes and exhibits along with detailed descriptions of the artwork. You will also find an audio glossary where you can hear Tibetan and Sanskrit names and terms pronounced. This site is best viewed using the free Flash Player.

The Violin - At this beautiful site you will learn everything from the history to the science of the violin. You can also listen to violin music written by famous composers.

Terri Windling's Endicott Studio for Mythic Arts - Endicott Studio is a monthly online journal featuring works by writers, painters, sculptors, photographers, and performance artists who produce contemporary art and literature that is rooted in folklore and myth. World Arts West: People Like Me Activities - This site is a good resource for teachers who want to incorporate performing arts and cultural appreciation into their curriculum. The basic exercises on this site help students explore these topics.

The Experience Music Project - Watch this space! This site highlights an interactive music museum, which will open in year 2000 in Seattle WA, offering features on musicians old and new, games, and an on-line recording studio.

Haring Kids - Making use of cutting-edge animation plug-ins like shockwave and flash, this site creates a colorful and compelling whirlwind of art, with beautiful images from artist Keith Haring.

BadArt.Com - What constitutes bad art? Is it in the eye of the beholder, or is there some other standard? Check out this site and decide for yourself. Whatever you decide, this is a visually impressive and provocative site.

WhiteBoard - At this site, you and other Web visitors can create art on a shared white space. Though it can be messy, this is a promising and entertaining experiment.

1200 Years of Italian Sculpture - This site offers a wide-ranging archive of images, organized by sculptor and by region.

Vignette - This site offers daily notes about the history of architecture and design, and it has a clean, elegant look.

Why is the Mona Lisa Smiling? - Produced by High School students, this site has a rich store of information about the life, art, and science of Leonardo da Vinci. Check out the MIDI recordings of da Vinci's musical compositions!

Global Children's Art Gallery - This site makes the most of a simple idea: Let children from around the world submit their artwork, and display the pictures in an online gallery. Children ages one through twelve have posted their work, and free scanning is provided if needed.

Gaudi Central - A gorgeous and comprehensive look at the life and buildings of Antonio Gaudi, the Spanish architect who designed some of the most fantastic and beautiful buildings of the past two centuries.

Charles Rennie Mackintosh - Learn about this remarkable designer, architect, and artist. The site contains photographs of buildings and furniture designed by Mackintosh, as well as his paintings and drawings.

Vision and Art - A tutorial dedicated to teaching how visual information is used in art. The site covers "Interposition," "Relative Size," "Impossible Figures,"Aerial Perspective," and more. This is part of a larger tutorial on sensation and perception.

Art Watchers - An interesting site with information for both both beginners and more advanced art enthusiasts. The site is limited in scope but the articles are thoughtfully written and presented.

National Endowment for the Arts Homepage - Learn about the important work the NEA is involved in, check out the featured artist, or browse the online gallery.

Rube Goldberg Official Site - Learn about the Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist. He is best know for his cartoons of wacky inventions--some of which appear on this site. Only one complaint--a few of the cartoons are a bit hard to read. Still, this site is worth a visit.

A. Pintura: Art Detective - A creative way to teach art history. A. Pintura helps visitors solve "The Case of Grandpa's Painting." Is the painting a Raphael? Van Gogh? Titian? You'll have to find out for yourself!

Eileen Gray Home Page - A comprehensive look at a fascinating woman. Eileen Gray was an an architect, an artist, and a designer. The site is attractive and easy to navigate.

Paul Friedlander: Light Sculpture and Computer Art -The artist himself says it best, "Light is the closest we come to directly sensing the universal energy. My intention is to make those who see my art aware of this evergy and inspire them with a sense of wonder." These sculptures have a startling beauty as they create delicate, changing, three-dimensional patterns of light which float in the air.

IllusionWorks - It is true that you can spend hours on the Web-especially so if you land upon this site. I could barely tear myself away to write this blurb. This extensive site hosts the largest collection of illusions on the Internet.Check out the Java and Shockwave illusions.

The Florence Art Guide - View the art and architecture of beautiful Florence. A "clickable" map of the city provides easy navigation.

The Incredible Art Department - An excellent resource for art teachers. It includes lessons, art site of the week, pet peeves, and much more. The "Art News" section wasn't very up-to-date, but my guess is that once school starts, new stories will appear.

Cusimano: Surrealist Artist - Interesting work. Cusimano is described as..."Canadian metaphysical surrealist artist known for his enigmatic excursions into the landscape of the soul where the unreal can seem real in the metamorphosis of time."

Marque Cornblatt Sculpture Gallery - An interesting collection of sculpture. Check out the robotic sculpture. Well presented.

The ArtMetal Project -The introduction says it best, "The ArtMetal Project is a not-for-profit volunteer venture of a group of metalsmiths and organizations which aims to disseminate information about various aspects of artistic metalworking and to provide a forum for artists and art lovers to experience this outstanding medium."

Common Boundaries - An interesting and provocative site, Common Boundaries presents artwork, poetry, and other forms of expression. Well designed, and the content is interesting and thought-provoking.

Kaleidoscope Resource -This site certainly qualifies as "cool"! Learn about the history of Kaleidoscopes, view beautiful Kaleidoscope images, or find out how to build your own.

Salvador Dali's Homepage - A great site with stunning images by Salvador Dali. Included at this site is "A Docent's Tour of Salvador Dali Resources on the Internet." This site is well worth the visit.

The WebMuseum - Visit the WebMuseum network. View the work of Paul Cezanne or Art of the 20th Century.

Travels with Samantha - An interactive book where you'll come face to face with examples of the stunning ethnic, scenic, and cultural richness of North America.

The Leonardo Web Site - A great collection of Leonardo da Vinci's work. This site includes oil paintings, drawings and sketches, and much more.

National Museum of Women in the Arts - March is Women's History Month we highlight the National Museum of Women in the Arts, "the only museum in the world dedicated exclusively to recognizing the contributions of women artists."

Museum of Web Art - At this Web-based art gallery you'll see examples of the latest technologies in Web design and computer art. On view are interactive computer art installations, stories and game-like activities for kids, and innovative Web designs. Check it out and expand your idea of what art is and what it can do!

The Useum - A visually elegant experiment into what an online, interactive museum might be like. This site will disappear for revision in September, so take a look!

Centre George Pompidou - This well-constructed site contains online exhibits and information about this famous art center.

The Posters of Toulouse-Lautrec - The site is well designed and the works are compelling. The site contains historical information as well as reproductions of the posters in two different sizes (for those who are bandwidth challenged).

Krannert Art Museum -An interesting collection of both historic and contemporary works. The site itself is simply designed and easy to navigate. This site is full surprises like a QuickTime Player VR tour of the African Art collection and a special feature on "Science in the Art Museum."

Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco -This site features works from the De Young Museum and the Legion of Honor. This site also contains "Imagebase," a collection of over 60,000 works of art.

The Whitney Museum of American Art - As you'd expect, this site is beautifully designed. General information as well as some selections from the Whitney's current exhibitions are included here. The exhbit "Beat Culture and the New America 1950-1965" caught my eye.

The Complete History of the Discovery of Cinematography - This site is unusual in that it documents ancient history leading to the birth of cinematography. This historical chronicle starts with the discovery of the pinhole image around 900 B.C., and ends in the late 1800s A.D.

120 Years of Electronic Music - Learn the history of electronic music from the musical telegraph of 1876 to the Kurtzweil synthesizer of 1983.

Cultural Arts Resources for Teachers and Student - This site offers a range of online resources related to traditional arts, folklore, anthropology, and oral history, including RealAudio interviews.

African-American History Through The Arts -This site, produced by high school students, features contributions from famous artists, articles on photograph and the cinema. In addition, there is a chronology of African and African-American art from the ancient world to the present.

Click Here! - Visit this amazing online exhibition of "anti banners!" "The idea behind this exhibition was to convert the dying banner-ad into an art form and fill it with sense and beauty. It was not supposed to sell anything but an idea..." Another must visit is the related interactive music/art site, Soulbath.com .

Opt Technology - The Web is becoming more than a source of information: more and more, it is home to some strange and beautiful hybrid art. This site is both thought-provoking and strange. Requires the QuickTime Player.

The Great Globe Gallery - Many, many globes for you to check out. There are 83 different globes included on this page. The page is a bit heavy on the graphic side, so you may need to be patient when connecting.

Cartoonbank.com  - "On the Internet, nobody knows you're a dog," one canine remarks to another in a New Yorker cartoon by Peter Steiner. The New Yorker is known for its clever cartoons from respected cartoonists, including Charles Addams and Jack Ziegler. Now you can find your favorite New Yorker cartoons online (even if you are a dog). You can browse through hundreds of cartoons by subject, or search for specific cartoons. You can even download cartoons (for a fee) to include in your next PowerPoint presentation.

Olga's Gallery - Online Art Museum - Large collection of images of the works of the world's best artists with biographies and historical comments. Sorted by alphabet, topic, movement, and nationality/country. Offers a newsletter, and archives are available.

Picklebird: Los Angeles Alternative Art Magazine - This e-zine focuses on alternative art: "outsider, contemporary folk, pop, naive, lowbrow, visionary or intuitive." Regional work is also featured.

Electronic Archives for Teaching the American Literatures - "The Electronic Archives contain essays, syllabi, bibliographies, and other resources for teaching the multiple literatures of the United States. Favorite Poem Project - Robert Pinsky, a poet and the author of this site says, "If a poem is written well, it was written with the poet's voice and for a voice. The purpose of this site is to share the Favorite Poem Project with the widest possible audience." The Favorite Poem Project shows audio and video of people reading their poems. Students of all ages are invited to participate.

Gale's Literary Index - Doing a report on an author, or need to find literary criticism about a particular work of literature, but aren't finding any useful information on the Internet? This free index lets you search it by author or by title. Then it will tell you which reference books (like Contemporary Authors, Contemporary Literary Criticism, or the Dictionary of Literary Biography) you can find the information in. You will need to visit your local public or college library to see if they have these books, since the actual texts of these reference works are not freely available online. Using this index, though, can save you from having to look through tons of reference books at your library, since you'll know exactly what books (and what page numbers) will be helpful to you.

Index Translationum: International bibliography of translations - A free database for researching whether a book has been translated into another language. In English, French, and Spanish.

Literary Timeline - With this handy search tool, users can look up "significant literary events" for each day of the year. For example, on January 1st, 1811, James Fenimore Cooper married Susan Augusta De Lancy. On the same day 139 years later, Eudora Welty's Short Stories was first published.

The New York Times Book Review - Over 50,000 book reviews back to 1980 from the famed New York Times Book Review are archived and searchable, plus special Web-only features. Registration required.

Perseus Digital Library - An evolving humanities digital library. Presently collects materials on classics/antiquity, Victorian London, natural philosopher Robert Boyle, the history of Tufts University, and part of the Library of Congress-sponsored American Memory collections.

Pilot-Search.com - "Pilot-Search.com is a free online search engine - comprised strictly of literary links. Pilot includes over 10,000 searchable links. With over 250 categories Pilot covers Book Reviews, Interviews, individual writers like Tennessee Williams, Ghost Writing Services, e-Text, MFA Programs, Short Story Contests, and much more."

PoemHunter.com - A database of nearly 36,000 poems, modern and classic, that allows searching by poet name, poem title, and poem text. More than 5000 poets are included and the site allows poets to submit poems as well. This site does have a large number of pop-up ads.

Pulp Fiction Central - This site is an excellent introduction to pulp fiction. It includes an in depth definition of pulp fiction, information on the popular serialized characters, in addition to a few electronic versions of literature which is deemed to be "pulp fiction."

The Purple Crayon: A Children's Book Editor's Site   - For children's books, this is a great site. It was created by an editor for kid's books. It provides advice for writers, links to literature for kids on the net, on-line books and reviews, book awards, educational resources, and various visual reference materials.

Renaissance Liturgical Imprints: A Census - "This is a database of information about worship books printed before 1601... RELICS now includes information on over 8,890 titles. This information is based upon personal inspections of books in most of the major research libraries of the United States and also libraries in a few selected European cities. Some additional information derives from published bibliographies and library catalogs."

Spanish Literature Resources - This is a good place to find online Spanish literature available throughout the world. Links include the National Library of Spain, on-line Spanish texts and publications, and book review sites.

The Tale of Kieu - The Tale of Kieu, written by Nguyen Du,(1766 - 1820), is Vietnam's epic national poem. This site offers two lectures about the poem, one by Mr. Tien, Dong Khahn Hotel manager,(formerly a Vietnamese high school teacher), and one by John Swennson, DeAnza College faculty and organizer of this site. This resource provides, among other things, biographical information about Nguyen Du, the historical context of the poem, the concept of the tale, and various commentaries on different sections of the tale.

Vintage Reading Group Guides - This site offers online reading guides for various books. Designed especially for book groups, the guides include a description of each book, questions, discussion topics, and author biographies. Titles are arranged alphabetically, but they are also grouped according to category such as mystery.

Transparent Language: the Internet Language Community - Learn to say common phrases in over thirty different languages! The Evolution of Alphabets - On this page you will find educational animations that show the evolution of many different alphabets from their root alphabets.

Online ASL Dictionary - A visual dictionary of American Sign Language. Some things can only be said in pictures, and this site uses animated photographs to display the beauty and meaning of sign language words and phrases.

Private Art - A collection of World War II letters to and from the home front. Graphically the site is quite impressive and the letters are interesting, I just wish there were more of them.

American Folklore - "This folklore site contains retellings of American folktales, Native American myths and legends, Tall Tales, weather folklore and ghost stories from each and every one of the 50 United States."

Poets.org: Listening Booth - Poetry is best when read aloud. Head to the listening booth to hear music made from words. You will need the RealPlayer.

Spotlight on Voices and Visions - This site explores the work of 13 of America's most famous poets. Medieval Drama Links
- Information on everything from set design to medieval props and makeup. There are over 200 links. A great site for drama teachers.

American Literary Classics-A Chapter a Day - As is recommended by this site, make a resolution for the New Year to keep up with your reading! I didn't think reading could be so engaging through the Internet but this site proved me wrong. The chapter is supplemented with reader's comments and additional supplementary readings.

Pyrowords - A literary site that features mostly poetry. Visually, the site is somewhat interesting; the combination is quite engaging.

Today in Literature [read review] - a calendar of engaging stories about the great books, writers, and events in literary history.

Whichbook.net [pick] [read review] - allows users to choose a book to read based on their mood, and also to find out where it's available for loan.

We love being able to see definitions from such a variety of sources (and it frees up a lot of bookshelf space).
