MEDIA
Philosophical Toy World - A fascinating site created by
multimedia artist Zoe Beloff, which examines optical toys and other
pre-cinema devices. "Like philosophical toys themselves, these texts and
images are designed to be playful and provoke thought."
Street
Level Youth Media - This Chicago-based community program
educates youth in media arts and emerging technologies. Be sure to check out
their archive of Web projects by inner-city youth.
American Radioworks - Very cool interactive documentary
journalism. Check it out!
Cybercinema: An Interactive Site Devoted to the History of Computers and
Artificial Intelligence in Film -This site is a must-visit for
fans of robots and other intelligent machines in the movies. The database
covers cinema from the 1950s to today. There are galleries, articles, and
very cool sound files you can listen to, including: "My mind is going... I
can feel it."
Shutters Sprockets and Tubes: How Moving Image Machines Work
- This nicely designed site uses text and animation to explain everything
from how sound is recorded to how TV works. (You will need the
Flash Player to view this site).
Adflip - Visit this
site to reflect on America's past and present. Revisit your favorite decade
or search "the world's largest archive of classic print ads" by keyword, or
browse by year. The archive spans the 1940s to the present.
Reaching Out: The
Evolution of Communication - This ThinkQuest site covers the
evolution of verbal and non-verbal communication through human history. You
can learn about major events in the history of communication, learn about
the brain and language, hear alphabets in several different languages, and
see movies of communications satellite launches and deployments.
Reaching Out: The
History of Communication - Follow the history of human
communication, from the development of language ability in the human brain
to the invention of fiber optics and satellites.
Adbusters
- What effect does the proliferation of advertising in our visual
environment have on our culture? This site asks some pointed questions about
the way our view of the world is affected by mass media and marketing
techniques.
Science
Matters - This site provides an up-to-date guide to science
coverage in the media, ranging from television to radio to the Internet.
This is a clear and useful service in a world of information overload.
The George Lucas
Educational Foundation - This site offers useful resources and
information on the ways computers and network technology can enhance
peoples' efforts to improve their communities, schools, and lives. The site
also contains Edutopia, an on-line newsletter; the current issue highlights
the ways technology can assist people with disabilities to create and learn.
The New Venue

Web! Best viewed with a fast internet connection.

comprehensive database of new releases from top institutions engaged in
scientific, medical and business research. The engine itself is
straightforward and easy to use.

issues and events shaping our world." Their two main stories are on the war
in Bosnia. the
QuickTime Player VR movies are worth checking out.
Portraits in Cyberspace - Find out who
is out there in cyberspace. An interesting site that addresses how people
are affected by this new virtual world. Part of "A Day in Cyberspace."
The
Ultimate Collection of News Links - Looking for a newspaper in
Peru? Or in Cameroon? This site provides links to newspapers world-wide.
Graphically it is not the most engaging site, but the extent of the
hyperlinks provided is impressive.
The Greatest
Films - If you love film, this site deserves a bookmark. Check
out films by genre or by title. The site also contains quotes and the
greatest moments and scenes in film. I don't agree that all of the films
here are "great," and there are some omissions, but everyone's a critic.
NPR Science

popular NPR radio show designed just for kids. There are activities, home
experiments, and more.
