DOGMATIC CONSTITUTION ON DIVINE REVELATION (Dei Verbum) Preface I – Revelation Itself II – Handing on Divine Revelation III – Sacred Scripture, its Inspiration and Divine Interpretation IV – The Old Testament V – The New Testament VI – Sacred Scripture in
the Life of the Church DV on Revelation:
Scripture and Tradition transmit Revelation in different but complementary
ways. The preaching of the Gospel is the source of salvation. The Church is commissioned to preach the Gospel to the whole of creation. What the Church is called upon to proclaim today it draws from Sacred Scripture and from the tradition “Which comes from the Apostles… with the help of the Holy Spirit. For there is a growth in the understanding of the realities and the words which have been handed down…. The Church constantly moves forward toward the fullness of divine truth until the words of God reach their complete fulfillment…” (n. 8). The teaching office of the Church interprets the word of God as it is communicated in Scripture and in the successive interpretations of the Scriptures (tradition). “The teaching office is not above the word of God, but serves it…. It is clear, therefore, that sacred tradition, sacred Scripture, and the teaching authority of the Church…. Are so linked and joined together that one cannot stand without the others, and that all together and each in its own way under the action of the one Holy Spirit contribute effectively to the salvation of souls” (n. 10). |
